Have you been to the Museum of Florida History? Lately? Could be time for a new visit with the family.

On Saturday, my husband, our daughters and I spent the afternoon at the 36th Annual Children’s Day. There are a lot of permanent exhibits to explore — definitely hit the gigantic fossil of a mastodon — but we all agreed on our favorite: "Surf’s Up, Florida."

Explore:Museum of Florida History turns 40

A huge room full of beautiful old surfboards greeted us, along with lots of pictures and history of competitions, famous surfers, and surfing in each region of Florida. There are autographed posters and trophies to check out. Our girls especially loved the space to take a picture “riding the waves” on a real surfboard.

The exhibit runs through June 23, so there's plenty of time to get there, and best of all, admission to the museum is free. (Donations are accepted.)

There is a small Egg Cafe inside the museum with a few breakfast and lunch offerings, and picnic tables outside if you decide to bring your own. It's is a great place to spend a few hours with kids, especially if they're old enough to have an interest in history.

Details: Museum of Florida History, 500 S. Bronough St., with free parking in the garage next door. Open 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday and noon-4:30 p.m. Sunday. Visit www.museumoffloridahistory.com.

There are lots of family-friendly events going on this weekend. We're excited for the Daniel Tiger event. (There is nothing catchier than a Daniel Tiger tune!)

Who says there's no such thing?

Imagine this friendly guy dyed pink and sporting a forehead horn. That's a llamacorn.

Adorable Valentine’s Day photo alert! Get your picture taken with a real life pink “unicorn,” complete with horn. (OK, it's a llama dyed pink, but don't tell the kids. And don't worry, it's totally safe for the llama.) Photos with the "llamacorn" are free, but donations will be collected for the Leon County Humane Society.

Details: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Found for Home, 3348 Mahan Drive. Visit the Facebook event

Be our neighbor

Meet Daniel Tiger of PBS' animated "Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood." You can also ride a trolley and do some crafting in the Neighborhood of Make-Believe at WFSU's Be My Neighbor Day.

Details: 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday on Kleman Plaza. Free but registration requested. Visit the Facebook event.

See the skies

Check out the free planetarium show, “February Skies Over Tallahassee” hosted by the Tallahassee Astronomical Society. You'll learn about the stars, constellations and planet positions you can look up and see in February.

Details: 10 a.m. Saturday at the Challenger Learning Center, Kleman Plaza. Visit the Facebook event.

Not that kind of tweeting

Learn about birds in a short indoor slideshow, then move outside to build a chickadee or bluebird house with your kids. The cost is $15 for the pre-cut cedar box kit (siblings may work together) but it's strictly BYOH (bring your own hammer). Suggested for age 5 and up.

Details: 2-3 p.m. Saturday, Native Nurseries, 1661 Centerville Road. Space is limited, so call 386-8882 to register. Visit the Facebook event.

Get into the spirit

Learn how to paint a beautiful mandala with your choice of colors, on the pottery you select — mugs, plates, platters and more. It's $5 plus the cost of your chosen piece. For age 15 and up.

Details: 3-5 p.m. Saturday, Firefly Pottery Studio, 2915 Kerry Forest Parkway. Visit the Facebook event.
