The name Cluster Shuck was too shucking much at FSU

Hearth & Soul will feature an oyster happy hour to benefit reefs on Friday, Jan. 26, 2024.

Whether it was too edgy, an overreaction or no appreciation for puns, the Cluster Shuck oyster party on Saturday afternoon at University Center Club has been postponed.

The name of the event and its tagline, “A Shucking Great Time, For A Shucking Great Cause,” went too far for the Florida State University deans and university boosters.

“We don’t want to make a big thing about it,” Panacea Oyster Co-Op director of marketing Robin Olin said on Monday afternoon. “It has been postponed for this Saturday.”

The Cluster Shuck was going to feature farm-raised oysters from North Florida and other Southern food in Doak Campbell Stadium while it raised money for FSU women’s athletic scholarships. Tickets cost $40 for the general public and it was to take place in Tallahassee one hour before the kick-off of the FSU vs. Louisville football game in Kentucky.

The tongue-in-cheek name was deemed too much, though.

“We got some emails from donors who thought it was too edgy,” said Jerry Kutz, who is the director of communication for Seminole Boosters. “That is what I have been told.”

The Cluster Shuck is going on its second year. The inaugural event was hosted in 2017 by Visit Panacea at Wakulla County's Woolley Park.

Look for the Cluster Shuck to return under a different name later this season. Stay tuned for details.
