Runners hit Monroe Street downtown for last year's Jingle Bell Run. It was canceled this year because of the rain.

The 2018 Jingle Bell Run wasn't meant to be.

There will be no bells ringing or patter of feet coursing through Cascades Park this evening.

"We’re a bit gloomy over the run’s cancellation, but we are already looking forward to a brighter, shinier race next year," the city of Tallahassee posted on Facebook.

It's the first time in the Jingle Bell Run's history it had to be canceled. It rained most of the day Friday and more storms and rain were expected throughout the evening. It was canceled two weeks ago when rain caused unsafe conditions. The annual Winter Festival also was canceled for the first then.

"The weather is just not cooperating," said Ashley Edwards, director of the city's Parks, Recreation & Neighborhood Affairs. "We're really disappointed."

For anyone who preregistered, the proceeds will go to the Friends of Our Parks Foundation. Anyone who didn't pick up their race packet still can from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday or from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday at the PRNA main office in Myers Park.

The showing of "The Polar Express" was moved from Cascades Park to the Jack McLean Community Center, 700 Paul Russell Road. The movie starts at 7 p.m. Popcorn will be provided, but movie goers should bring a blanket and pillows to create a cozy spot on the gym floor.

Holiday celebrations continue Thursday with Elf Night from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Dorothy B. Oven Park. Soul Santa will make two visits to the community this year. The first is Dec. 21 from 2-6 p.m. at the LeVerne Payne Community Center, 450 W. Fourth St. The second is Dec. 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Walker-Ford Community Center, 2301 Pasco St.
