On Monday, the third night of "Battle Rounds" of the NBC show "The Voice," Tallahassee's Royce Lovett finally got his chance to get back in the game.

He and the other members of "Team Gwen" — those coached by superstar Gwen Stefani — have been preparing for stage 2 — a battle to try to knock out a member of their own team.

Stefani paired Lovett up with 22-year-old Las Vegas native Kiara Brown to sing a duet of Bob Marley's "Turn Your Lights Down Low."

You know the judges are having fun when they can't sit still, and Stefani chatted excitedly with "American Idol" winner Kelly Clarkson throughout her own team's performance.

At one point, Clarkson yelled, "Yeah!" and Stefani leaned over to say — a bit smugly — "I told you, right?"

Once the duet was over, Lovett and Brown waited nervously for the judges' critiques.

Clarkson praised Lovett's rasping voice, and the depth of his performance.

"It’s like you’ve had, like, 10 lives or something," she said.

"I gotta say, I think I’d go with Royce," said country singer Blake Shelton. "Because I just feel like he’s hitting a groove, and that’s pretty exciting."

"Royce, you were great," said John Legend. "Your voice was just made for this song."

All three judges were also impressed with Brown. Legend said she surprised him. "It’s exciting to see how much you have in there," he said.

"You shocked me," said Clarkson to Brown. "You came out here and you commanded the stage. You were toe to toe, I mean it was really good."

In the end, it was Stefani's decision, and though she said it was painful, she decided in favor of Lovett, who will move on to the next round of competition.

"I had to go with Royce," said Stefani. "Because his voice has so much character and personality, and dynamics, and he’s just really talented, has a lot of stage presence —he’s the full package.

Lovett teared up trying to talk about his victory.

"This is so cool to stay on Team Gwen," he said. "I love my family and everything I do is just to show people where I come from. That you can really do whatever you want to do, you know?"

Then he tossed his head back and laughed.

"Why am I crying?" he said. "I’m super happy right now."
