Former Godby offensive lineman Jordan Wiggins dies while at Georgia Southern
No cause of death has been announced yet for the first-team All-Big Bend lineman for the Cougars in 2018
On Monday night, Georgia Southern University released a statement via tweet that announced Jordan Wiggins, a freshman offensive lineman who played at Godby High School, had died.
No other information or cause of death was released by the university.
Wiggins was a first-team All-Big Bend offensive lineman for the Cougars in 2018, grading out at 88 percent with 73 pancake blocks while only allowing two sacks all year.
In a statement, Georgia State's athletics department said: “Our thoughts are with the student’s family, friends and classmates.”
"He never wanted to do anything if it didn't make someone else happy," said first-year Godby head coach Brandon McCray, who was Wiggins' o-line coach for two years. "He was always there for his friends. He would do anything for his linemen. He loved football, but even he did that because it made his friends happy."
The 6-foot-5, 285-pound Wiggins was studying electrical engineering at Georgia Southern, which is located in Statesboro, Georgia. The Eagles are in the middle of a 3-3 season.
Wiggins' mother Althea Jones died in 2017, and McCray's mother Katherine Pondexter took Wiggins in.
McCray spent late Monday night consoling his mother and grieving his own loss of a former player.
"That was like my adopted son," McCray said. "I coached with him for two years and against all his brothers for years.
"I'm still in shock. I don't know what to think. I've still got a lot of his stuff here at my house. I'm just trying to be here for my mom and all our players."
