The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge often keep the public updated on their endeavours via their social media accounts. But while the Twitter and Instagram display names for their @kensingtonroyal handles used to be Kensington Palace, the royal couple have now given the accounts a more personal spin, changing the names to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

The @kensingtonroyal handle was first established back in January 2015, at which time it acted as a shared account for Prince William, Kate and Prince Harry. After Harry’s marriage to Meghan Markle in May 2018, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex started up their own (now inactive) @sussexroyal Instagram account.

Thus what was once the Kensington Palace account has become ever more oriented around the specific activities of the Cambridge family, with the Instagram and Twitter bios now reading: ‘The official account of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, based at Kensington Palace.’

William and Kate have a significant following of 11.8 million on Instagram and 1.9 million, where avid royal watchers can stay in the loop on the couple’s activities. On Monday, to mark the beginning of Mental Health Awareness Week, the Duke and Duchess shared a video they appeared in along with a host of celebrities, including Dua Lipa and David Tennant. In the footage, William and Kate encourage viewers to open up about their mental wellbeing and reach out to others who they think might be in need of help.

The accompanying caption reads: ‘One minute. Across every single radio station in the UK. To kick off #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek, this year’s #MentalHealthMinute with @Heads_Together and @Radiocentre_uk is an important reminder that wherever or whoever you are, you are not alone.’

As passionate advocates for mental health awareness, such posts are pertinent examples of how the royal couple use their social media presence to support causes close to their hearts. It has also become a place where the Duchess can share her photography, such as the touching snaps of the Cambridge children released to mark their birthdays.
