STERLING - Paramedics worked twice as hard Friday morning, delivering twins in an ambulance parked on the side of Interstate 190.

A baby girl was delivered at 6:58 a.m., followed by little brother at 7:12 a.m.

All were in good health and were transported to the original destination, UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, according to the Fire Department.

"Congratulations to mom and dad and a job well done to the Ambulance and Fire Crews that assisted!" the Fire Department wrote on its Facebook page.

The deliveries were made after paramedics received a call about 6:45 a.m. that a woman was in labor on I-190 south, near Exit 5. It was clear that delivery was imminent, the Fire Department wrote. The woman was moved into the ambulance, where the boy and girl were soon delivered.

On scene for the Fire Department were: Chief David Hurlbut, Lt./EMT Tom Kokernak, Firefighter/EMT James DiVirgilio, Firefighter/Paramedic Rob Nickerson, Firefighter/Paramedic Phil d'Entremont and Paramedic Erin Cullinane. The state police helped at the scene.
