Jamshedpur granny belts out 34 songs in a day, setting a record

She always wanted to break Sanu's record, and finally succeeded -- at age 80

They say music knows no barriers of age or culture.

Meet Chinmayee Majumdar, an 80-year-old singer from Jamshedpur, who has set a record of singing 34 Bengali songs in one day.

A resident of Bagunnagar, Majumdar, who is a grandmother, has apparently broken the Guinness World Record of acclaimed Bollywood singer Kumar Sanu. The playback singer recorded 28 songs in one day.

All the 34 songs — composed by steel city-based musicians Manas Bhattacharjee and Manotosh Chatterjee and written by Majumdar’s late husband Late Dulal Majumdar and others — were recorded at Utkarsh Studio in Birsanagar.

When asked what made her sing so many songs in one day, Majumdar said she had always aspired to break the record of Kumar Sanu who also happens to be one of her favourite singers.

“I always wanted to break Kumar Sanu’s record of singing the maximum number of songs in one day. I finally succeeded at the age of 80. I believe if you want to do something, then age can hardly be a barrier,” she said.

The songs were recorded over a span of 14 hours from 9am to 11pm on January 15.

Majumdar is trained in classical music and has also learnt Rabindra Sangeet. In the past, she imparting music lessons to students.

At 80, Majumdar is extremely fit, thanks to her daily three-hour yoga. “Physical exercise is crucial to stay in good shape. I also hold free yoga classes for people in my colony. Yoga keeps me healthy and gives me loads of stamina,” said Majumdar, who stays with her son, daughter-in-law and grandson.

The singer aspires to meet Kumar Sanu in person. “He has entertained the masses for years and it would be nice to talk to him.”

“Among female singers, Sandhya Mukhopadhyay is my all time favourite. I mostly sing her songs during my stage performances,” she added.
