The BJP’s Mizoram unit president J.V. Hluna on Monday accused rival candidates of making fake promises, which they would not be able to fulfil, to woo voters.

“The candidates who are novices and not even politicians, insulted former Lok Sabha members and veteran politicians from the state when they made statements as if they could do everything instead,” he said.

Of the six candidates in the fray for the lone Lok Sabha seat, only BJP nominee Nirupam Chakma is believed to have political experience.

A former Congress leader, Chakma successfully contested Assembly polls for five terms between 1987 and 2008 and became a minister in the erstwhile Lal Thanhawla cabinet for two terms. He joined the BJP in 2015.

Taking a dig at Zoram People’s Movement-Congress nominee Lalnghinglova Hmar, a journalist, Hluna said he was wasting his time by saying that he would oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, for which he became a candidate supported by the ZPM and Congress.

He also blamed Mizo National Front nominee Lalrosanga, a retired director- general of Doordarshan, for allegedly making a statement that he will have more opportunity to serve God if he was elected to the Lok Sabha.

“Being an MP is not an opportunity to extend God’s ministry but to serve the country,” he said.

Hluna said they have complete faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi and their candidate, Chakma.
