Flea market weekend, hummingbirds and Ukuleles — all offer cheap Nashville fun

The weekend is humming along with plenty to do without spending much money.

There is music, nature, the monthly flea market and more. 

Ukulele concert

The Nashville Ukulele Society Summer Fundraising Concert is Friday from 6:30-10 p.m. at Douglas Corner Cafe at 2106 8th Ave. S. There is a suggested $10 donation with proceeds going to the Ukulele Collective to provide instruments and instruction in the Metro Public Schools and Libraries.

The Ukedelics will perform as part of the ukulele night this week.

Featured groups include the Ukedelics, Bob's Your Uncle and Lucky U, along with Rachel Pearl, Mockingbird and others. Bring a ukulele for the play/sing-a-longs. All ages are welcome. Details: 615-202-6053.  

Celebrate hummingbirds 

Warner Nature Center invites you to its celebration of hummingbird migration from 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Saturday. There will be hummingbird banding; a gardening lecture with Mike Berkley; and "Amazing Hummingbird Stories" with Heather Gallagher from 12:30-1 p.m. at the nature center Center 7311 Highway 100.

Flea market

The monthly flea market at The Fairgrounds Nashville will have its final weekend of sales in its existing sheds and buildings Friday through Sunday. The Sept. 20-22 market will take place in the new Expo space on the Nolensville Road side of the fairgrounds property. Parking is $5, but admission is free.

Lipscomb Stampede

Lipscomb Academy has five free "Music City Mustang Stampede" music and family fun community events that will take place at 4:30 p.m. before the high school football games on Aug. 23, Aug. 30,  Sept. 20, Oct. 10 and Nov. 1. The initial Stampede festival this week will feature a short set by Sheryl Crow and others. The lineup for the other pregame fun has not been announced.

Organizers say Stampede, which will include live music, inflatables, games and food vendors, will take place on the Lipscomb Academy baseball field adjacent to the football field at the Reese L. Smith Athletic Complex located at the intersection of Caldwell and Lealand Lanes. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs.

Franklin Watermelon Fest

The Franklin Farmers Market Watermelon Festival is 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, with the  annual watermelon seed-spitting contest and fastest watermelon eating contest. Plus there will be wild watermelon carvings and slices of ice cold watermelon. The market is at Factory at Franklin, 230 Franklin Rd. in Franklin.

Storytime Live!

Kiddie Academy of Brentwood is hosting a "Storytime Live!" reading event at 10 a.m. Saturday with Curious George and Pinkalicious appearing as part of the program. Kiddie Academy is located at 216 Jamestown Park Rd. in Brentwood.

5 Points Swing

Williamson County Parks presents 5 Points Swing band "boogie woogie" concert and dance on Sunday at the Williamson County Arts Center at Academy Park at 112 Everbright Ave. in Franklin. Tickets are $10 at academyparktn.wcparksandrec.com.

The dance lesson is at 2 p.m. and the music and dancing follow at 3 p.m. 1940s attire "admired but not required" and there are prizes for best outfits.

MaupinFest 

If you are looking for an old-time music festival, the MaupinFest Celebration of Old-Time Dance and Music in Unionville this weekend may be what you want. It takes place at Hootenanny Haven, 539 Coopertown Road in Unionville,  which is northwest of Shelbyville. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children and there will be concerts, buck dancing contests, workshops, jamming, and a late night square dance.
