Metro police say a man on a Bird scooter ran a red light and was struck and injured by a BMW in downtown Nashville Monday morning.

The wreck took place about 7:50 a.m. Monday at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Commerce Street, a Metro Nashville dispatcher said.

Police spokesman Don Aaron said the BMW was traveling west on Commerce Street though the intersection with a green light and the scooter was traveling southbound on Fifth Avenue in the right-turn only lane.

The scooter operator failed to stop at the Fifth Avenue red light and attempted to cross Commerce, Aaron said. In addition to the red light, the “Don’t Walk” signal was also active.
