A STRETCH of the A761 in Brookfield is set to remain a 30mph road after a review agreed the speed limit should not be changed.

Since the limit was dropped from 60mph to 30mph more than five years ago, the section between the Deadhillock Roundabout and the Branscroft Junction has seen half of the number of incidents.

And now councillors look set to rubber-stamp proposals to keep 30mph signs in place on Bridge of Weir Road.

The findings of the review, which will be presented at full council on Thursday, said: “The key stakeholders and interested parties are in unanimous agreement that the speed limit on this particular stretch of road should not be changed.

“These are the services which have both the authority and technical expertise in this area.

“Significantly this is also a strongly held view of the local community council.

“There was evidence provided that since the new speed limit’s introduction there have been less traffic incidents on this stretch of road.

“When the speed limit was introduced there were no objections lodged at that time.

“The Scottish Government recommends that too many changes of speed limit along a route should be avoided to reduce confusion to drivers.

“The Environment and Communities Service views the 30 mph limit as consistent within the surrounding local road network and Scottish Government guidance.

“Brookfield Community Council highlighted longstanding concerns about poor visibility for vehicles entering and exiting from the village from this road.

“It is concerned any speed limit increase would heighten the risks to both motorists and pedestrians further.”

Traffic cops advised Renfrewshire Council against changing the limit at a meeting of the Audit, Risk and Scrutiny Board in November of last year.

From 2005 to 2011 there were 10 “slight incidents” – a figure which has since dropped to just five between 2012 and 2017.

There were no serious or fatal incidents in either period.

At the board, Police Scotland’s Ryan McAuley said: “In terms of enforcement activity, it has had a significant decrease.

“I manage Renfrewshire Council’s complaints for speeding locations and I’ve not seen Brookfield for some time now.

“Police Scotland’s position is that we wouldn’t support an increase and would like it to remain as a 30mph speed limit.”
