1. Compass Point Eatery, King’s Road,

Our winner is a 1920s’ inspired restaurant found in the shadow of the i360 with a menu of USA-based favourites including milkshakes, pancakes, subs and their traditional “po’ boy”, a submarine sandwich from Louisiana. The menu is easy on the eye, comforting to the stomach and kind to the wallet. It’s £7.95 for a stack of pancakes.

One TripAdvisor reviewer said: “We really enjoyed our pancakes, my only complaint was that I couldn’t eat it all as it was too delicious.”

4. Burger Brothers, North Road

Burger Brothers scooped up the best burger in Britain award in 2017, so it’s no surprise the place features so highly on our list.

There’s no fries, no gimmicks and no nonsense at this independent restaurant. It makes make sure it’s all about the burgers, and the fact you can pick one up for a fiver certainly doesn’t hurt either.

One reviewer said: “You see the reviews but you don’t want to be sucked into the hype, then you eat the burgers and realise it isn’t just hype, the burgers are first class. It won’t be long until I’m back.”

5. Wheat and Beans, St James’s Street,

The union of coffee and cookery has served Wheat and Beans, and their customers, well.

Consummate knowledge of caffeine drinks twinned with a colourful display of baked goods is hard to argue with. Some treats are as little as £2.

A TripAdvisor review said: “I couldn’t walk past the amazing carrot cake in the window and, after tasting it, I was glad I had given in to my temptation. It was home made by the owner’s mum, and was moist, light and utterly delicious, I only wished I hadn’t suggested sharing it with my better half.”

6. Brighton Burger, Market Street

Don’t judge a book by its cover – this unassuming shack in Brighton’s Market Street churns out some of the best burgers in the city with inventive flavour combinations, such as bacon and smoked applewood. Burgers start at £6.50.

9. Jack and Linda Mills Traditional Fish Smokers, King’s Road Arches

The husband and wife team opened up their eatery on Brighton’s seafront nearly 20 years ago and, although they have recently retired and handed over ownership, the smokery still has a reputation for its succulent crab sandwiches. These cost about £4.40.

A reviewer said: “This isn’t easy to find, you could easily walk past it, but halt there, please don’t walk past it as you’ll probably regret it if you are a fan of good wholesome fish dishes freshly caught and served impeccably well.”
