Here’s Why This Bhopal Police Inspector Won India’s Best Cyber Cop Award

Bhopal-based cop Abhishek Sonekar recently bagged the ‘Best Cyber Cop in India’ award for cracking a cyber-fraud case. As reported by the Times of India, Inspector Sonekar was presented with the award by the Data Security Council of India and NASSCOM, at an official function in New Delhi.

On September 16, Inspector Sonekar had cracked a cybercrime case which involved unidentified fraudsters duping two Bhopal-based industrialists of Rs 42.03 lakh. This not only earned him recognition in the state but also sealed his name as the state nominee for the national award.

As per the procedure, all the state police departments send nominations for the award.

Speaking to TOI about the case, Inspector Sonekar said that the accused had firstly blocked the SIM card of one of the partners at the firm who was responsible for handling the internet banking procedures. They did so, to later arrange a duplicate SIM card using his name through forged documents. The money was then stolen and transferred to different bank accounts in Mumbai, Delhi, Surat and Kolkata, in 12 transactions, through RTGS, NEFT and IMPS.

In addition to his individual recognition, the state cyber cell of Madhya Pradesh police was also conferred with the ‘excellence in capacity building’ award, for their contribution in spreading awareness on cybercrime and information security, building a good infrastructure and for their strides in controlling cybercrimes.

A team of three jury members comprising the DGP of Kerala, a Supreme Court lawyer and the Additional Director General of Police, had scrutinised all the applications, and finally selected Inspector Sonekar as the awardee.
