There is “major disruption” to rail services between Edinburgh and London after a person was struck by a train between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Newcastle.

The 10am, 1.30pm and 2.30pm Edinburgh to London King’s Cross journeys were cancelled following the incident on Wednesday morning.

The 7am and 7.30am trains from the UK capital to the Scots capital were also called off.

Journeys travelling through Courier country were also delayed as a result of the issues further south.

The 7.52am Aberdeen to London, 7.55am Inverness to King’s Cross, 10am King’s Cross to Aberdeen and noon King’s Cross to Inverness services were all delayed.

However the worst of the disruption is between Newcastle and Edinburgh, with problems expected until 5pm.

The incident near Newcastle, an electrical fault between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Dunbar and a broken down train in north-east England added to the disruption experienced on the rail network between England and Scotland.

A LNER statement reads: “A number of incidents today means trains between Newcastle, Alnmouth and Scotland are currently being disrupted.

“Although trains are able to run on the route between Newcastle and Scotland now, major delays can still be expected to trains. Your journey may be delayed by up to 60 minutes.

“We anticipate disruption will continue until at least 5pm.”
