After their victory against St Mirren earlier this month, Robbie Nielson and his team now know they will be facing Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals.

The teams have been drawn together six times in cup competitions. The form book shows picking a winner is not easy – but you shouldn’t be surprised to see some red cards at Tannadice on Sunday March 3.

2016/17: Scottish League Cup

Inverness CT 1-1 Dundee Utd (United win 4-1 on penalties)

The last Scottish League Cup match was a close one. Scott Boden’s first-half header gave Caley Thistle confidence but Steward Murdoch equalised in the 46th minute. United were convincing winners in their subsequent penalty shoot-out.

2013/14: Scottish Cup

Inverness CT 0-5 Dundee Utd

It has been five years since Dundee United and Inverness CT have met in the Scottish Cup. Under Jackie McNamara, United thrashed their opponents with a 5-0 win at the Caledonian Stadium. Nadir Citfci laid the groundwork with two goals before half an hour had been played, then Gavin Gunning scored a penalty. Red cards for Greg Tansey and Marley Waltkins poured salt in the wounds of the home team, who conceded further goals to Gary Mackay-Steven and Stuart Armstrong. United went on to the final, where they lost to St Johnstone.

2013/14: Scottish League Cup

Inverness CT 2-1 Dundee Utd

Nadir Ciftci was sent off in controversial circumstances in a bad-tempered League Cup quarter-final at Inverness in 2013.

Despite Keith Watson scoring within the first five minutes, Terry Butcher’s Caley Thistle equalised through Gary Warren, pushing the game into extra time. Ross Draper scored the winner for Thistle on the 120th minute. A red card given to Citfci – the hero in the Scottish Cup tie the same season – didn’t help the United cause.

2006/07: Scottish Cup

Inverness CT 1-0 Dundee Utd

Russell Duncan scores what turned out to be the winning goal.

Caley’s last Scottish Cup win over United was over a decade ago. A 16th minute strike by Russell Duncan was the only goal of the game and Craig Levein’s experienced Tangerines side were out of the cup in February.

2005/06: Scottish League Cup

Inverness CT 2-0 Dundee Utd

Liam Fox in action for Inverness CT in 2005

Liam Fox and Barry Wilson secured a win for Inverness CT with two goals before half-time, with Lee Miller receiving a yellow card for United. Caley went on to the quarter-final, where they lost to Livingston.

1997/98: Scottish Cup

Inverness CT 2-3 Dundee Utd

Following on from a weekend draw, United and Caley Thistle returned for a fourth round play-off in the Highlands. An early goal from Kjell Olofsson gave the Tangerines the lead for the majority of the game. Gary McSwegan’s 84th minute goal looked to have ended the contest, but back came Caley Thistle to level through Brian Thomson and Mark McCulloch in the last five five minutes. After a frenetic finish, United’s win was secured thanks to Lars Zetterlund.
