IOWA CITY — The Iowa men's golf team capped an impressive weekend Sunday by winning the title at the Hawkeye Invitational at Finkbine Golf Course.
Iowa shattered the school's 54-hole record by 24 strokes, carding an 809 (43-under) to top second-place Illinois by six strokes.
'The course got harder and windier today and our guys stepped up and closed the tournament out,' Iowa Coach Tyler Stith said. 'I am really proud of them.'
In addition to the team title, senior Matthew Walker and junior Alex Schaake ended up earning co-medalist honors with a program-record, tournament-record and career-best 54-hole score of 199 (14-under). They both beat the previous school record by four strokes.
'Matt and I played really well this week,' Schaake said. 'I have had so many second-place finishes and just needed to get the job done once to know I can win.'
They became the first Hawkeyes to win the Hawkeye Invitational since Steven Ihm in 2014.
'It is incredible to have that (school) record,' Walker said. 'There was a nice turnout of fans and being able to play in front of family and friends, it gave us an edge that we needed to get it done.'
Junior Benton Weinberg (9-under) finished sixth, sophomore Joe Kim (4-under) was 14th, and freshman Gonzalo Leal Montero (2-over) was 34th for the Hawkeyes. Weinberg and Kim each shot personal bests.
Next up for Iowa is the Big Ten Championships on Friday in Philadelphia.
