Domestic help, husband, accomplice held for burglaries in south-east Delhi

They targeted locked houses; two more accused on the run

A couple and their accomplice have been arrested for allegedly committing burglaries in south-east Delhi, the police said on Thursday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) Chinmoy Biswal said that the accused have been identified as Mahmood alias Mamun (37), his wife Fatima (34) and their accomplice Mohammed Zakir alias Alamgir (35).

The police said that the woman used to work as a domestic help. She conducted recce before each burglary to pass the information to her husband and the other accused.

The police said that on September 29, they received an information regarding a burglary at a house in National Park Residential area in Lajpat Nagar. The complainant reported a theft of ₹50 lakh, diamond and gold jewellery and a high-end wrist watch among other valuables. Based on the complaint, a case was registered and an investigation was launched.

“CCTV footage of the area were examined and the suspects were spotted leaving in an e-rickshaw,” Mr. Biswal said, adding that informers were deployed and a vigil was kept on criminals released on bail.

Raids conducted

Based on information gathered from sources, raids were conducted in Taimoor Nagar and Sarai Kale Khan on Tuesday and all three accused were arrested. “Mahmood and Fatima’s house was searched and ₹8.91 lakh cash, stolen jewellery, a laptop and mobile phones were recovered. We recovered ₹23 lakh cash, two wrist watches, perfumes, leather bags and foreign currency from Zakir’s house,” Mr. Biswal said.

During interrogation, the accused told the police that they would target locked houses during the day.

“Fatima used to pass the information to her husband and the other accused. They used to come to the locality in an e-rickshaw and enter the targeted house after breaking the door lock,” Mr. Biswal said, adding that police teams are looking for two other accomplices who are absconding.

The police said that Mahmood and Zakir had been arrested earlier and were released in August. They are involved in several cases of burglary.
