The body of 43-year-old Johnson Gabriel, the lifeguard who had gone missing off the Shangumugham beach two days ago, was found from near Valiyathura on Friday.

Johnson’s body was found washed ashore near the Food Corporation of India (FCI) godown by local residents by around 1.30 p.m., soon after which the authorities were alerted. Soon, the search efforts that were being jointly undertaken by the Coastal police, Marine Enforcement and Indian Coast Guard since Wednesday were called off.

The body was shifted to the Government Medical College Hospital after the Valiyathura police completed inquest proceedings.

Johnson, who hailed from Rajiv Nagar, near Shangumugham, was washed away by strong waves after he had managed to rescue a woman who had attempted suicide. He is survived by wife Shalini and children Abhi and Athira.
