Thiruvananthapuram: Caring hands offer relief to the flood-affected

Corporation sends 14 loads of materials and district administration 20 tonnes to affected areas across the State

Till Monday, the city Corporation sent 14 loads of flood relief materials to various districts, while the district administration sent 20 tonnes of materials over the past two days.

The materials that the city Corporation has sent till now include 60,000 litres of drinking water, 20 tonnes of rice, seven tonnes of pulses, as well as snacks, clothing, cleaning materials and other materials. On Monday night, three more loads of materials are expected to be sent to other districts. Though the collection centres did not have much visitors on the first day, over the past two days a number of city residents have visited the camp with several boxes of relief materials. The Corporation is also providing a certificate for those contributing relief materials.

On Monday, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran, and former Mayors V. Sivankutty and K. Chandrika visited the centre.

1,800 volunteers

The Corporation now has 1,800 young volunteers working for it across two collection centres at the Corporation office and at Government Women’s College, Vazhuthacaud. The volunteers are also collecting materials through house visits.

Hundreds of city residents also contributed materials to the district administration’s collection centre at SMV school. On Monday, Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran flagged off two trucks carrying 13 tonnes of relief materials. Materials weighing 6.5 tonnes sent on Sunday reached Kozhikode on Monday.
