Colour sorting, counting, texture writing, and many other learn and play materials have been fashioned out of reusable materials in around 80 anganwadis. In an initiative to inculcate a sense of responsibility among children towards a greener earth, the campaign — Mothering Dreams — saw around 1,200 mothers come together to create educational aids at the anganwadis.
According to a press release here on Sunday, the campaign was launched by United Way Bengaluru (UWBe) and the educational aids developed by these mothers are in line with the curriculum.
A mother is a child’s first teacher. Recognising this sentiment, UWBe aim was to mobilise the mothers of anganwadi children to engage in recycling activities, at multiple locations, according to the release. While the mothers create these materials, the children, apart from watching and mimicking, also learn from their mothers the importance of green principles in life. The activity also is hand-in-hand with the campaign’s goal of strengthening pre-school children’s cognitive and motor abilities. The activities involved creating items that require concentration and skill, the release said.
Empowering them
In learning from the mothers on how to recycle waste into articles that matter to them such as educational aids and playthings, UWBe attempts to simultaneously empower the women, children, and the environment for a more sustainable future, the release stated.
“The objective is to get the mothers in the underprivileged community come together and prepare child-friendly play materials using reusable and eco-friendly products,” said Rajesh Krishnan, chief executive officer, UWBe.
