A low pressure area prevailing over the equatorial Indian Ocean and the adjoining Bay of Bengal offers hope of a good spell of rain over north Tamil Nadu later this week.
On Monday, N. Puviarasan, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, said the weather system is likely to become well-marked in 48 hours. It could further intensify into a depression over the next 24 hours.
“Tamil Nadu may not experience any significant rainfall till Wednesday,” he said.
If the system moves towards the north, north-westerly direction, there is an increased chance of rainfall, he added.
While a few coastal areas in Tamil Nadu may begin to get rain on Thursday and Friday, an increase in rainfall activity is expected from Saturday.
Fisherman have been advised not to venture into the sea as a squally weather may prevail over the equatorial Indian Ocean and the ining Bay of Bengal till Wednesday. Winds may blow at 55 km per hour.
Chennai is among the districts that have only half their share of rainfall this northeast monsoon. With 34.3 cm of rainfall since October 1, it has a deficit of 52% rainfall this season.
