Speakers at a seminar hosted by the Pondicherry University have called for introducing wellness education at school-level.

Such a move was all the more important given that the country had one of the highest proportions of youth in its population, the experts felt.

Inaugurating the ‘IIIrd International Conference on Wellness Education (ICWE-2019)’ Lt. Governor Kiran Bedi, who is also the University Chief Rector, underscored the need for wellness education.

She later released the course material, brought out in the form of an edited book, Wellness education .

Anu Peshawariya, Indian-American US Federal Attorney, Anu Attorney Professional Firm, PLLC, Washington Law Corporation , in her felicitation address, said wellness should be interwoven in all aspects of human life.

Never Again , her third book which encapsulates her experience as a crusader against domestic violence in the U.S. and a campaigner for the cause of the marginalised, was launched on the occasion by Prof. Gurmeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Pondicherry University.

Prof. Mumtaz Begum, Dean, School of Education, Pondicherry University, received the first copy.

Prof. Singh, in his presidential address, said physical well-being and mental well-being were two sides of the same coin and were an integral part of human life.

Prof. Begum dwelt on the significance of wellness being built into the school curriculum for nurturing a healthy nation.

Relevance for India

India witnesses the highest youth population percentage and hence, it would be all the more relevant to give serious thought to wellness education at the school-level itself, she said.

G. Kumaravel, ICSSR-Post-Doctoral Fellow, presented the concept note of the conference.

Teachers, educators, NGOs, University academicians and other distinguished invitees participated.
