The Pondicherry University has refuted charges levelled against Vice-Chancellor Gurmeet Singh that he was trying to ‘saffronise’ the University.

In a statement, Assistant Registrar (Public Relations) K. Mahesh said the Vice-Chancellor had presided over a lecture series organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Human Resources Development. The lecture was delivered by the Director of Syama Prasad Mookerjee Research Foundation, Anirban Ganguly.

“At the end of the programme, many students and research scholars were interested in taking a group photo with the guest and V-C. In such circumstances, the photo referred to is purely incidental and not intentional as alleged,” the statement said.

The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) in a statement had alleged that the V-C posed for a photograph with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) workers who were wearing T-shirts with the message “Modi once more.”

“Pondicherry University is a Central University, fully-funded by the Government of India, having students, research scholars, faculty members from across the country. The question of alleged involvement of administration in any election campaign and political activities in favour of any political party does not arise,” the statement said.
