The murder of Angadi Jyothi, a 24-year-old pharmacy student from Mangalagiri, kicked up a storm in the district with family members putting forth a slew of demands on Friday.
The demands include suspension of the Deputy Superintendent of Police of the Guntur North Sub-Division, compensation of ₹15 lakh, and a plot of land for the family.
Local outfits lent support to the family and staged protests outside the Collector’s office on Friday. Later, they submitted a representation to Joint Collector Himanshu Shukla.
The incident, which occurred on the night of February 12 near an empty stretch adjacent to the cricket stadium in Mangalagiri, sent shockwaves across the district.
Mangalagiri Rural Circle Inspector Balaji and Sub Inspector Rama Rao had been suspended by the Inspector General on charges of dereliction of duty. Conceding to the demands of the family, a second post-mortem was conducted on Thursday in the presence of the tehsildar.
Police draw flak
The victim’s family alleged that the police had tried to hush up the case by not insisting on a proper post-mortem. The police were also accused of a botched up investigation as they reportedly did not collect the girl’s clothing as evidence after her burial on February 13.
Senior police officials reportedly pulled up investigating officers after details of the case began to be published in the media.
Vague leads
Preliminary investigations revealed that Jyothi was killed after being hit on her head by a blunt object. A man, Chunchu Srinivasa Rao, presumed to be her friend, sustained injuries on his head and is in hospital.
Police did not name any accused though there were hints of a possible relationship between Jyothi and Srinivasa Rao. Police said they are collecting call data records of conversations that the duo had.
