As per the report, 3,59,849 cases of crime against women were reported in the country. Uttar Pradesh topped the list with 56,011 cases followed by Maharashtra with 31,979 cases and West Bengal 30,002.
However, Delhi topped the list in terms of crimes per 1 lakh population, with Kerala the second highest. The map shows the crime rate in States and UTs across the country.
Crime against women
The number of crimes committed against women have increased in 2017 by 6% compared to 2016 and by 9% compared to 2015.
“Majority of cases under crimes against women were registered under ‘Cruelty by Husband or his Relatives’ (27.9%) followed by ‘Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty’ (21.7%), ‘Kidnapping & Abduction of Women’ (20.5%) and ‘Rape’ (7.0%),” the report said.
As per the report, 58,880 incidents of rioting were reported, of which the maximum incidents were reported from Bihar - 11,698, followed by Uttar Pradesh - 8,990 and Maharashtra - 7,743.
Among metropolitan cities, Hyderabad accounted for among the crime rates of 2.7% of the overall national figure. The national capital maintained its record as crime capital with 40.4% of the crimes in metros occurring in the city. Bengaluru with 8.9%, Mumbai with 7.2%, and Chennai with 3.6% contributed significantly to the crime statistics in the metros.
Crime against the elderly
Tamil Nadu topped the country in reporting grave crimes, particularly murder, against senior citizens. The State stood second after Maharashtra in reporting incidents of robbery and snatching targeting elders.
The statistics revealed that 188 senior citizens were murdered in Tamil Nadu, followed by 152 in Maharashtra and 127 in Uttar Pradesh. As many as 62 senior citizens were victims of attempt-to-murder cases in Tamil Nadu, which is the second highest in the country after Maharashtra that reported 66 such cases.
Cyber crime
A 77% rise in the number of cyber crime cases was observed in 2017 compared to 2016. Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka registered the maximum number of such cases. The map shows the number cyber crime cases reported from different States.
Road accidents
Among road accidents, Delhi stood first with 1,451 victims in 1,317 accidents caused due to negligence, while Chennai was in second place with 1,404 victims in 1,312 road accidents. Of these, 176 were hit-and-run cases and the vehicles that caused the accidents could not be traced.
