The process of restructuring the Congress State units started on Monday with the All India Congress Committee (AICC) dissolving all its district committees in Uttar Pradesh even as party chief Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to meet leaders and State in-charges of Maharashtra, Haryana and Delhi later this week.

On Monday, a statement from organisational secretary K C Venugopal said the AICC had accepted a proposal from the general secretaries of UP East and West to disband all committees, appoint a two-member team to oversee the by-elections in 11 Assembly seats and constituted a three-member disciplinary committee.

Leader of the Congress in the UP Assembly Ajay Kumar Lallu was appointed in-charge of the organisational reshuffle, said the statement.

Mr. Venugopal said the action was taken based on the proposals given by general secretaries Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Jyotiraditya Scindia, who were in-charge of the eastern and western Uttar Pradesh respectively.

The leader to initiate reshuffle in West UP is yet to be named by Mr. Scindia.

Though the Congress Working Committee (CWC) on May 25 had authorised Mr. Gandhi to restructure the party and the State units, he had refused to do so and instead announced that he would step down from his post.

For almost a month, he had refused to meet any party colleagues but met Chhattishgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and in-charge P L Punia last week to analyse the poll results.

On June 27, he is scheduled to meet leaders from Haryana and Maharashtra where elections are likely around October. A day later, he will meet the Delhi unit, where polls are expected in February next year.
