An incoming second western disturbance in the current series parked this (Wednesday) morning over East Afghanistan and adjoining Pakistan may soon start influencing weather over North-West India.

The disturbance might cause cause fairly widespread to widespread rains over the hills and isolated to scattered rain/thundershower over the adjoining plains.

Cyclonic circulations lie in wait above South-West Rajasthan and North Haryana, which would act 'step-up boosters' for weather conditions being heralded by the latest disturbance.

Thunderstorms to stay

Towards further East, a trough extending from East Uttar Pradesh to South-West Madhya Pradesh persists, promising thunderstorms and showers for parts of East India as well.

The productive interaction that a predecessor disturbance - which let loose a string of thunderstorms, showers, lightning, hail and heavy rain - had with the region, before fading out, will continue seamlessly.

In its outlook for today, India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms and lighting accompanied with gusty winds (50 km/hr) for Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Thunderstorms and lightning accompanied with gusty winds (40 km/hr) are forecast for Madhya Pradesh while thunderstorms/dust storms and lightning are forecast for North Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh.

Thunderstorm/dust storms and lightning accompanied with gusty winds (40 km/hr) for West Uttar Pradesh and North Rajasthan. Dust raising winds are likely over southern parts of Rajasthan during next two days.

Heat wave over Tamil Nadu

In the South, a trough originating from a circulation over Marathwada to north Tamil Nadu has shifted alignment to south Madhya Maharashtra and the Comorin across Interior Karnataka and Interior Tamil Nadu.

In this backdrop, the IMD has issued the following forecast outlook for today (Wednesday):

Thunderstorm and lightning accompanied with (i) gusty winds (60 km/hr) for Coastal Andhra Pradesh; (ii) gusty winds (50 km/hr) for Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry; (iii) gusty winds (40 km/hr) for Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, South Interior Karnataka and Kerala.

Heavy rainfall for Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya. Heat wave conditions over Vidarbha, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Heat wave conditions may persist over Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during next two to three days.

Thursday (May 16): Thunderstorm and lightning accompanied with (i) hail and gusty winds (50 km/hr) over Himachal Pradesh; (ii) gusty winds (50 km/hr) over Jammu & Kashmir, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry; (iii) gusty winds (km/hr) over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Odisha, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Saurashtra, Kutch and Coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Thunderstorm/dust storm and lightning accompanied with gusty winds (40 km/hr) at isolated places very likely over Rajasthan. Heat wave conditions over Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Heavy rainfall at isolated places very likely over Assam and Meghalaya.

May 20 to 22: Scattered to fairly widespread rainfall over North-West and North-East India as well as the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, in what is a precursor to the arrival of the South-West monsoon in the East Bay.

Isolated to scattered rainfall over South Peninsula, East India and Lakshadweep Islands. Dry weather likely over the rest of the country.
