The Karnataka government is planning to amend the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act 1976 to set up industrial township authorities in urban areas, according to UT Khader, Karnataka Urban Development Minister.
Addressing the mediain Mangaluru on Monday, he said the amendment to the Act will enable the industrial areas coming under urban local bodies (ULBs) to collect tax and develop their own infrastructure.
The proposed industrial township authority will be an eight-member body. Of this, five members will be from the industrial areas concerned and one representative each from the Department of Industries and Commerce, and the Urban Development Department. There will also be a government-nominated member from the ULB concerned, he said.
Many industrial areas under ULBs have brought problems to the notice of the ministry, he added.
One of the common grouses is that the ULBs concerned are not giving adequate importance for the development of infrastructure, though they collect a major chunk of tax from the industrial areas.
Khader said that he would be conducting a meeting with the Karnataka Industries Minister, KJ George, on bringing an amendment to the Act.
The Kanara Small Industries Association (KSIA) at Baikampady in Mangaluru had recently requested the Karnataka government to form Baikampady Industrial Township Authority for the better governance of the industrial area.
