The Karnataka government has has reduced the annual deep-sea fishing ban to 47 days from 61 previously.
An official statement said on Friday that deep-sea fishing activities have been banned for 47 days from June 15 to July 31. The revised order is effective only for this year, it said. Earlier, the ban was to start from June 1.
Mechanised boats and traditional boats fitted with inboard or outboard engines of 10 hp and above are banned from fishing activities during the 47-day period. However, fishing boats of lesser engine capacity are allowed to fish.
Those who violate the ban will not be eligible for the subsidised diesel for the whole year.
The government statement said that this decision has been taken keeping the interests of fisheries sector across the Karnataka coast in mind.
