Delays on the M6 are possible this evening due to protests related to Brexit, according to police.

A police statement said: "It is believed the protests, which will consist of vehicles driving slowly, could begin from 6pm tonight and affect sections of the motorway around junctions 33 (South Lancaster), 34 (North Lancaster) and 35 (Carnforth).

"It is expected there will be delays and congestion in the area as a result so please allow extra time for your journeys.

"The police will support Highways England, who are responsible for keeping our road network moving.

"While we facilitate the right to peaceful and lawful protest, we will also deal with any unlawful obstruction or other motoring offences as they become apparent."

An anonymous caller to The Westmorland Gazette this afternoon, who planned to take part in the go-slow protest, said it was meant to highlight what those taking part saw as a lack of democracy over the Brexit process.

"The law is that we should be leaving the EU on March 29," he said. "They (the Government) are undermining democracy."

He said that the protestors would comprise both 'Leavers' and 'Remainers' and people of different political persuasions.

He said the protest would comprise around 50 cars and would last for about two hours.
