Man arrested in Virginia double slaying was out on bond after Clarksville stabbing

A man arrested in a double homicide in Newport News, Virginia, was out on bond at the time for a stabbing in Clarksville, Tennessee.

Darrell Keith Chaney Jr., 37, is charged with shooting two people following an argument at a restaurant on Thursday, Aug. 9, according to News 3-WTKR in Newport News.

Witnesses told police that Chaney was sitting with one of the men at a table when the argument started. That man went to the back of the business, and Chaney then walked to the counter and shot a man at the register, police said, and when the other man came back, Chaney shot him, WTKR reported.

Both were shot several times, and both were pronounced dead at the scene. Police say Chaney admitted to shooting them.

Chaney was being held at Hampton Roads Regional Jail on Friday morning, jail officials confirmed.

At the time of the shooting, Chaney was out on bond for an arrest over a stabbing in Clarksville.

According to an arrest warrant obtained by The Leaf-Chronicle, on March 27, Chaney got in a fight with a neighbor at an apartment on Union Hall Road. During the fight, Chaney stabbed the man in the chest with a knife, the warrant said. When police arrived, the man was unconscious.

Police said Chaney admitted to stabbing the man. He was charged with aggravated assault. His case was bound over to the grand jury on April 10, and he was released on bond June 10, according to court records.
