Santa Fe girls, All Saints boys lose regional finals

ORLANDO — The Santa Fe Catholic girls and All Saints Academy boys tennis teams failed in their bids to advance to the FHSAA state tournaments next week, but coaches for each were not disappointed.

“We played exceptionally well today,” said Santa Fe head coach Chris Collany of his girls who played at Orlando First Academy. “For having only five players, I feel good to get as far as we did. We certainly have something to build on next year.”

“We played all seven matches and I am glad First Academy agreed,” Collany said. “I think it would be a disservice to the system and we wanted to maintain the integrity of the game.”

Freshman Kathrine Dockery, who has been coming on strong late in the season, had an extremely tough opponent. She had won both her singles and doubles matches at district last week.

“Her opponent didn’t miss many shots and Katherine had her hands full,” said Collany of the two-hour match.

Surprisingly, Anay Patel of All Saints, who was 15-2 overall and 10-1 in dual matches through the county tournament did not have his best game against his Trinity Prep opponent.

The junior player won 6-2 in the first set, then lost, 6-2 to sophomore Nathaniel Cohen-Nemie before dropping a 10-6 in the tie breaker.

“He just didn’t play very well and was up against a solid player,” said the Saints’ head coach William May.

All Saints lost all seven matches at Trinity Prep.

Patel will still be going to the state tournament in singles, and with his doubles partner, Jacob Bruschayt.
