The South west monsoons arrived in Kerala after a week’s delay. Yet, within days of its arrival, four rain related deaths have been reported in the state. 

Two of the deaths were reported in Thiruvananthapuram where two people, including a woman, were electrocuted on a waterlogged road, according to reports. The man and woman aged 63 and 60 died after they had come into contact with a broken power cable in the Pettah neighbourhood of Thiruvananthapuram. 

Another death was reported from Kochi where a tree fell on a man and injured several others as well. The victim was a lottery ticket seller who was riding his two-wheeler when a tree got uprooted and fell on him as well as a car which was passing by. Two people who were sitting inside the car also sustained injuries.

In Shoranur, a Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) worker died after falling from an electric pole on Monday evening, according to reports. The deceased was identified as Rajesh (42), an employee at the Kolapulli KSEB office. He fell from an electric pole during maintenance work. Although he was rushed to the hospital, he could not be saved. 

According to IMD updates, a deep depression in the Arabian Sea intensified and moved north and north westwards at 15 kms per hour on Monday. The depression is very likely to turn into a cyclonic storm in the next 24 hours. 

Heavy rains at isolated places can be expected for the next three days, according to the Met Department. Across the coast of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, wind speeds could increase 35 to 40 kmph. Fisherfolk too have been warned not to venture out into the seas for the next two days as the weather could be rough.

Parts of the state received heavy rainfall including Alappuzha (7 cm), Neyyattinkara and Varkala (Thiruvananthapuram) and Cherthala and Mancompu (Alappuzha) received 4 cm each.

Thiruvananthapuram city and Ernakulam received a rainfall of 3 cm each, according to the IMD.
