Chinese smartphone maker Oppo has just announced that it is setting up an R&D facility in Hyderabad. This will be its first in the country and largest outside of its home country China. The facility will contribute towards bringing exciting innovation and advanced technologies to India.

And for this unit in Hyderabad, the company is in the process of hiring 500 engineers according to an ET report. The company has made it clear that it is strengthening its presence here and going ahead, it is trying to increase the localized contents in its products.

Oppo will be looking at driving several innovations at the Hyderabad R&D centre and will focus its efforts on the development and implementation on software localization for Indian consumers as well as device quality.

Oppo has increased its focus on innovation and R&D and recently announced a global investment of RMB 10 billion towards the R&D space for 2019. With this OPPO will integrate its supply chain and build on its technical expertise to enhance the company’s technological capabilities.

In addition to smartphones, the Chinese tech major will also make smartwatches, Internet of Things (IoT) products as well. These may include home speakers and other products for which the R&D centre will be the starting point. So, it may be the case of designed in India, manufactured in India and sold here plus maybe even exported out of India. The sheer size of the Indian market and the endless possibilities for products of different kinds are factors no international brand can ignore. There is an evolved ecommerce ecosystem too in the country that helps launch their products led by mobile phones at different price points.

Experts for the OPPO R&D Centre will be hired from reputed institutes such as the IITs and will contribute to the better understanding of the Indian consumers and creation of products that will have represent the best technology and design. The R&D centre will be focusing on product stabilization along with the Indian operators through collaborations.
