ALBION COLLEGE

Three county athletes earn weekly honors

Cross country runner Jordan Revenaugh (Rochester/Rochester Adams), volleyball right side hitter Kate Winter (White Lake/Lakeland) and men’s soccer midfielder Joel Zaretti (Troy) represent Albion College among the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Athletes of the Week for Sept. 30.

Revenaugh was near the front of the pack as Albion runners braved chilly conditions in Chicago last Saturday for the Loyola Lakefront Invitational.

Revenaugh finished third out of 276 runners in the women’s 5K race. She reached the finish line in 19 minutes, helping Albion finish 15th out of 30 teams in the meet.

Winter helped the Briton volleyball team score four-set victories over Saint Mary’s College and Adrian College on the opening week of MIAA competition. She achieved a .267 hitting percentage with 29 kills and nine errors in 75 attacks. Winter has achieved double figures in kills, including an Albion-record 24 in the four set victory over Franklin (Ind.) College on Sept. 21, in each of her last six matches. She leads the team in kills with 182 in 16 matches so far.

Albion volleyball is 11-5 overall.

Zaretti, a junior from Troy, thwarted Bluffton University in the early stages of its attack to gain the Defensive Player of the Week award.

Albion men’s soccer Coach Wytse Molenaar added, “Joel has been very good in keeping the ball moving for our team, eliminating opportunities for the other team to even start any form of attack.”

Albion defeated Bluffton, 3-1, last Friday for its fourth victory in a row. The Britons boast a 5-4-1 record heading into its MIAA opener, an Oct. 8 date at Trine University.

A first for Sharp

Kayla Sharp, formerly of Farmington High School, scored her first goal at the collegiate level as Albion kicked off the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women’s soccer season with a 3-1 victory over Saint Mary’s College on Tuesday.

OAKLAND UNIVERSITY

Winner golfers finish second

Mariella Simoncini shot a final round of 73 (+1) and finished tied for 16th place with a score of 227 (+11) as the Oakland women’s golf team concluded competition at the Shirley Spork EMU Invitational at Eagle Crest Golf Club.

Amalia Shahzan placed the highest for the Golden Grizzlies, finishing in sixth with a score of 221 (+5). The transfer from Cincinnati registered a final round of 77 (+5) on the day.

Kay Zubkus recorded a final round of 75 (+3) and finished tied for 10th place with a score of 225 (+9).

Oakland placed runner-up as a team with a three-round score of 903 (+39), its third-best 54-hole score in program history.

The Golden Grizzlies will return to action on Oct. 14-15 for its only out-of-state competition this fall at the Mastodon Fall Invitational hosted by Purdue-Fort Wayne.

Men’s soccer ties rival Detroit Mercy

Spencer Nolff scored his first goal of the season off assists from Dawsun Schrum and Dyan Borczak as Oakland played arch-rival Detroit Mercy to a 1-1 double overtime draw on Saturday night. The Golden Grizzlies (4-3-2, 2-0-1 HL) remain unbeaten at 4-0-2 against the Titans (2-5-1, 0-2-1 HL) since the inception of the Metro Series in 2014.

After both teams battled defensively to remain scoreless at the half, Nolff got Oakland on the board in the 68th minute. Borczak got the ball up to Schrum, who took a touch on the right side and fired a beautiful cross to Nolff, who delivered a one-time strike into the right side of the net giving the Golden Grizzlies a 1-0 lead.

In the 74th minute, Oakland was called for a hand ball inside the box which resulted in Detroit Mercy’s Kyle Bandyk getting the equalizer by connecting on the ensuing penalty kick.

The Golden Grizzlies travel to Wright State on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Levy takes home weekly cross country honor

Cross country’s Rachel Levy has been named the Horizon League’s Runner of the Week, announced by the league office on Tuesday, becoming the first Oakland recipient this 2019 season.

Levy, a redshirt senior from Midland, placed runner-up in the women’s 5k at the 2019 Loyola Lakefront Invitational this past weekend in Chicago with a time of 17:33.20. Levy helped lead her team through cold and rainy conditions to a fourth place finish out of 18 teams.
