PIERRE — Watertown High School’s track and field athletes were supposed to be at home Thursday competing in the Watoma Relays.

Last week’s snowstorm wiped out the home meet and forced the Arrows to head to the Pierre American Legion Relays.

The Arrows did more than just show up. They rolled to the boys division title with 130 points and finished second behind Brandon Valley in the girls division with 71 points. More than 20 schools competed.

“I’m just thankful on behalf of both the Pierre and Watertown administrations that we were allowed to come out here,” said Watertown head coach Chad Rohde. “It was very appreciated, the kids certainly enjoyed it and it was nice to get a meet in against some teams we don’t normally see.”

Watertown’s boys continued their strong spring so far, winning seven of the 19 events.

Pierre Lear swept the hurdle races, Cooper Mack took the shot put and Jake Werner won the 100-meter dash and anchored the winning 400 and 800 relays. Watertown also won the medley relay in one of the state’s fastest times so far this season (3:45.11).

Hunter Cordell, Adam DeJong and Garrett Determan joined Werner on the 400 relay. Hartman, Brett Fossum and Mason Morris also ran the 800. Cordell, Determan, DeJong and Jared Fransen ran the medley.

“We competed, that’s for sure,” said Rohde. “Some kids didn’t have the day they wanted. It was 59-60 degrees and the wind was swirling, which made it a challenge in some of the events.”

Sophie Tietz (100 hurdles) and Alayna Falak (long jump) won events in the girls division for the Arrows.

“We had a pretty good day. It was fun,” said Rohde.

The Arrows are off until Saturday, April 27 when they compete in the Aberdeen Invitational.
