Prices peaked at £2200 to average £1689 at Harrison and Hetherington's Monthly Dairy Sale at Carlisle, where a 100% clearance was witnessed for 210 head.

Sale leader was Nydie Gandhi Shamrock, a Gandhi-sired heifer giving 33kg per day, bred from a dam that gave almost 15,000kg as a three-yearold. Consigned by R and A Wilson, Clackmae, Berwickshire, she sold to Messrs Spedding, Kirklinton, Carlisle. Clackmae sold another 10 heifers to average £1995.

The Mounsey family from Ashfield Farm, Carlisle, sold the second top priced lot, Ashberry Goodwhone Lyne, at £2150 to Messrs Hunter and Son, Penrith

Lowick Northfield Farms, Northumberland sold six heifers to average £1805 from a top price of £2120 for Ellenneff Grazie Cavaliero.

Another 18 heifers sold for £2000 or more to include Wragmire Allstar Trix, from R and A Cockley Bank Ltd. Another 17 heifers from the same home averaged £1744.

Trade for in-calf heifers was down £118 on the month and sold to £1550 for an entry from D Graham, South Lambhill, due to the Hereford for October.

Bulling heifers peaked at £900 on numerous occasions.
