‘Mortified’ Edinburgh woman goes viral after thinking she had been caught speeding – by cardboard cut out copper

Megan Finlay panicked in a group chat with her pals that she was going to get a fine and points on her birthday

A "MORTIFIED" Edinburgh woman has gone viral after thinking she had been caught speeding - by a cardboard cut out copper.

Panicky Megan Finlay told her pals in a group chat that she was convinced she had been snapped by the officer - who apparently "flinched" as she passed.

She was by her own admission "freaking out" as her friends tried to reassure her that she would be OK.

And she was convinced she was going to be hit with a punishment on her birthday.

But when one member of the group drove along the same road they couldn't believe their eyes upon spotting the cardboard figure on the pavement.

Megan was similarly astounded when Laura Cruikshank got in touch to inform her of her faux-pas.

Another pal, Iona Blair, posted screenshots of the conversations as well as a pic of the phoney policeman to Twitter.

She captioned them: "When Megan Finlay thought a police man was onto her... #daymade."

The group chat shows a Natalie Armstrong trying to convince Megan that she wouldn't be punished.

She says: "I think it's only if they stop you Megs" and "You get 10 per cent over the limit."

But an adamant Megan is unmoved and says: "He flinched when he saw me. I googled it and it said they don't have any obligation to stop you and it takes 14 days to get a letter in the post.

"Freaking out. My birthday is in 14 days happy bloody birthday to me."

The next screen grab is of a later WhatsApp chat with Laura Cruikshank.

Laura begins: "Megan, see that policeman last night, was he on lower Granton Road."

She responds that he was, adding that her pal was "scaring" her.

Laura goes on: "Did he have the camera up to his eye? Like standing along at the grassy bit, next to a lamp post."

Megan confirms all these things to be true adding "Scaring me even more."

And when Laura delivers the punch line - "It's a cardboard cut out", she hilariously responds: "F*** OFF."

Hilariously, the next pic posted shows the bogus officer that fooled her.

The cut out is attached to a lamppost underneath a speed camera sign, and with one held up to his eye.

Iona's post has been retweeted more than 260 times and been liked by more than 1,300 social media users.

And users were in stitches at the lass' moment of panic.

Emma Forbes said: "'My bday is in 14 days' this has cracked me up again."

Iona replied: "'He flinched when he saw me' was my favourite bit."

Lauren Quinn said: "Hilarious. Cheered me right up."

Darren Keenan added: "Amazing."

Megan herself got involved saying she was "mortified" and adding "I'm such a t**."

We told earlier how a video of a 'Port Glasgow' lad snorting a mysterious white substance to the Cha Cha Slide tune had gone viral.

And another Scottish lad went viral after having his mates in stitches at being unable to stop himself asking the classic taxi ice-breaker.
