He had split from the mother of his child, Jamie Lee Steel, two days previously and she was now seeing Findlay.

The judge heard how it was 48 hours until an ambulance was called for the stricken victim.

Mr Perrie was left with a brain injury and needs rehab amid concerns whether he can now live without help.

Findlay today pled guilty to assaulting the victim to his severe injury, permanent disfigurement and impairment as well as to the danger of his life.

The High Court in Glasgow heard both men had known each other since childhood.

Mr Perrie had been in a relationship with Miss Steel but they separated on April 13 and she then started dating Findlay.

The next day Miss Steel visited her ex to hand back keys but they got into a spat.

Findlay was spotted repeatedly walking past Mr Perrie's home on April 15.

Mr Perrie later left his house and his mum believed he was going to visit a friend.

But he was instead confronted by Findlay who smacked him on the head with a baseball bat.

Prosecutor Greg Farrell said: “He swung the bat backwards then struck Mr Perrie once on the side of the head. He fell to the ground.”

The victim eventually managed to go back inside.

He told his mum it must have been “that Jamie Lee Steel causing bother”.

Mr Perrie was later described by a friend as “pale, sweaty and not in a good way”.

He went back home to bed at 7pm.

His mum – who stayed with him – believed at 11pm he was sleeping.

She checked him several times through the night – by morning he was still apparently asleep.

Mr Farrell added: “Through the day, she tried unsuccessfully to wake him.

“She believed that he was alright as he was breathing and in his normal sleeping position.”

The court heard Mr Perrie did not eat, drink or get up for the full day during April 16.

But, the next morning, his mum found him “in the same position he had been in the previous day”.

The woman then left to tell a relative what had happened.

When they got back at 6pm, Mr Perrie was discovered on the floor with a lump on his head and his face swollen.

The court heard an ambulance and the police were then finally called.

He was found at hospital to be unconscious and in a “critical” condition

Mr Perrie needed surgery having suffered bleeding at the brain.

A doctor stated she could not comment on whether “the delay” in getting medical help had worsened the injury.

Another medic said Mr Perrie could have died without an operation.

The dad was in hospital for five weeks – but he remained badly affected by the attack.

The court heard he would need “a prolonged period of rehabilitation”. There were further concerns about his “ability to live independently”.

Findlay was held at Miss Steel's home – and told police: “All this for self defence”.

Lord Clark deferred sentence until December 19 in Aberdeen.
