The retired teacher, 74, said: “We had a roast dinner in the oven, waiting for family to come over.

“I looked up and there was this tall man. My son was on the settee and he was hitting him hard with the truncheon. I tried to get in the way and he broke a bone in my wrist.

Cops are probing whether Sunday’s attack in Troon, Ayrshire — thought to have involved a second thug — was a case of mistaken identity.

Detective Sergeant Jane Hogg said: “This was a terrifying attack.”

One suspect was around 6ft tall and wearing a balaclava. The other, in his mid-20s, was about 5ft 5in with chin-length hair. They may have been using a small black car.
