This morning's heavy snow caused chaos as Scots tried to make their way to work in treacherous conditions

SCOTLAND has been lashed with snow this morning, with the country's roads being thrown into chaos.

"Severe" warnings were in place from the Met Office and they proved to be correct with the white stuff tumbling from the sky as Scots tried to make their way to work.

Temperatures plummeted to -10C in some parts, making roads treacherous and forcing cops to warn drivers of the dangers.

Journey times were extended with public transport also delayed and a number of vehicle smashes across the country.

Many punters snapped wintery pictures, illustrating the heavy snow fall we've been experiencing.

One snap in Glencoe shows roads and surrounding hills completely covered in a blanket of white, with a police car out as officers do their best to control the situation.

And Glasgow and the surrounding areas have also been snapped as the roads and streets are bombarded and left soaked.

Many drivers have been experiencing difficulties with the weather causing congestion and crashes.

A Meteogroup forecaster said: "It will be a cold day across the UK with sunny spells and but also plenty of scattered wintry showers.

"The wintry showers will be most frequent in the north and west but some will spread east later on. Snow is most likely on northern hills but may settle at lower levels at times."

Northern and western areas are also likely to see thundersnow – when heavy snow is combined with thunder and lightning – as a polar maritime air mass moves in.

A Met Office spokeswoman said: "Northern and western parts are most likely to see any heavy wintry showers, and with that we could see some breaks of thunder and lightning, and heavy snow showers.

"When thunderstorms form in wintry conditions, they can sometimes give rise to heavy downpours of snow, along with the usual thunder and lightning, so it is called thundersnow.

"It is considered unusual because it can only really occur during a few months of the year."
