A HIBS fan’s first words in four months after he suffered a severe stroke were “Hearts are sh*t”.

Darren Thomson, 22, left Jambo-supporting medics in stitches by piping up suddenly when he overheard them talking about the team.

He said of his hospital banter: “It’s hard to put into words what it’s like not being able to speak.

“It just came to me. I was so happy that I spoke out and everyone laughed.

"It felt so good to just hear my own voice again.”

Dad Phil, 55, added: “Most of the nurses were Hearts fans. We couldn’t believe it, I just laughed.”

Darren, of Galashiels, Selkirkshire, was watching YouTube videos last June when he was struck down by a blinding headache and lost feeling in one side of his body.

Tests at Borders General Hospital revealed a blood clot on his brain.

He was put on life support at Edinburgh’s Western General and had a series of operations, but was left unable to speak by brain damage.

Darren needs 24/7 care but stays positive thanks to his dad’s support.

He added: “He’s been unreal. If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be here today.

“I thank him so much for everything he has done”.
