Knife maniac repeatedly stabbed clubber after row over ‘girlfriend’ on Glasgow’s Kushion nightclub dancefloor

A KNIFE maniac repeatedly stabbed a Glasgow clubber on the dancefloor after a row over his "girlfriend".

Violent Stephen Weir lunged at his victim armed with the weapon and repeatedly struck him on the head and body in the city's Kushion.

The yob, 30, first approached Jack Fisher on the dance floor because he was dancing with a "girlfriend".

One of the victim's pals was then struck by an associate of the knife attacker and Weir joined in with Mr Fisher intervening to help his friend, before turning away from Weir.

A judge told Weir at the High Court in Edinburgh: "It appeared to be all over.

"You knew it was not."

Weir then launched his knife attack on Fisher and repeatedly stabbed him, before covering his face as he left the club in a bid to avoid detection.

Judge Gordon Liddle QC told Weir: "Two things are clear. Firstly you are a very dangerous individual and a significant risk to the public.

"Secondly you show no signs of stopping your campaign of serious violence."

The judge said he had considered calling for a full risk assessment report on Weir which can result in the imposition of a life sentence under an Order for Lifelong Restriction.

But he told Weir that he would deal with him by imposing an extended sentence, with a five year period of supervision to follow a 10-year jail term.

The judge said that during that five year period Weir would be under licence and could be returned to jail if he breaches its conditions.

He told Weir: "Because of the gravity of the crime which you have committed and your previous criminal record a custodial sentence is the only appropriate disposal in your case."

The court was told that Weir has previously been jailed for serious assaults armed with a sword and a knife and was given a six-year sentence in 2009 for a life-endangering attack.

Weir had earlier denied attempting to murder Mr Fisher, 22, at the nightclub on September 7 last year by threatening him, taking part in a fight and repeatedly striking him on the head and body with the knife to his severe injury, permanent disfigurement and to the danger of his life. But he was convicted of the murder bid by a jury following his trial.

Weir had originally faced further charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice by covering his face as he left the club, changing the colour of his hair before an identification parade and giving false details to police and behaving in a threatening way on September 13 at Christie Place, in Cambuslang, by shouting, swearing and kicking the window of a police vehicle while being arrested.

The judge said that Mr Fisher had travelled to the Glasgow club with friends for a night out.

He told Weir: "It unfortunately placed him in the wrong place at the wrong time and by that I mean within the vicinity of you."

Defence solicitor advocate Marco Guarino said that Weir worked as a labourer and has no outstanding matters to come before the court.

He said: "He very much accepts and respects the verdict of the jury and is well aware of my lord's sentencing powers."

Weir, a prisoner in Glasgow's Barlinnie jail, gave a thumbs up sign as he was led from the dock to start his sentence.
