Serious smash locks down A1 blocking major route from Scotland to England

A SERIOUS smash has locked down a main route between Scotland and England this afternoon.

The A1 is closed in both directions south of the border after the crash.

It is expected to be shut for between four and six hours as officers investigate the smash.

Traffic Scotland warned any motorists planning to travel south to avoid the route.

They said: "#A1 is closed in both directions south of the border near Alnwick due to a serious RTC.

"The road is likely to remain closed for some time.

"If you are heading south on the #A1 today please #PlanAhead and follow @HighwaysNEAST for updates."

Highways England wrote on Twitter: "#A1 Southbound at #Shilbottle. UPDATE - @northumbriapol inform us that the closure is expected to be in place for 4 to 6 hours for investigation and recovery work."
