Glasgow Christmas lights switch on 2018 at George Square this Sunday – what time does it start and are there any tickets available?

The countdown to December 25 is officially on - and it's almost time for the city to get into the festive spirit

WITH less than six weeks to go until Christmas, the big countdown is officially ON.

The most wonderful time of the year is fast approaching.

That means it’ll soon be time for Glasgow to get into the festive spirit.

And where better to start than the official Christmas lights switch-on?

Here’s all you need to know about the event.

When is the Glasgow Christmas lights switch-on?

The city’s official lights switch-on will take place today.

The annual festive celebrations will take place at George Square.

The event starts at 5pm with the lights expected to be turned on later in the evening.

Several roads around the city centre will be closed - you can check what ones are shut here.

How can I check if I have tickets?

Glasgow Love Christmas say if you applied for tickets to see the Christmas Lights switch on, you should have received an email from Glasgow Life advising if you have been successful or not.

If you haven't got one make sure to check your spam folder and wait 24 hours as your mail provider may have delayed delivery.

What other events are happening in Glasgow for Christmas?

There are loads of other exciting events in the city to celebrate the festive season as part of Glasgow Loves Christmas.

Glasgow's Christmas market is now open in St Enoch Square and the other will open in George Square on November 25.

There’s the Glasgow Style Mile Carnival on Sunday 25 November, with music, dancing and performances in the city centre.

Baby’s First Christmas will also take place on Saturday 8 December with hundreds of newborns invited to the City Chambers to meet and have their picture taken with the Lord Provost.

The Blessing of the Crib will take place in George Square with the Lord Provost on Wednesday 6 December.

And on Sunday 9 December the city centre will transform into a sea of Santa suits with the annual Santa Dash 5K.
