And shocked parents have vowed to hug their children tighter after the alleged blade attack.

Weeping locals paid tribute to “beautiful wee boy” Kane and prayed for the eight-year-old in hospital as police launched a probe into the tragedy.

Cops are understood to have found both youngsters with stab wounds after a member of the public raised the alarm.

An injured man, 37 — believed to have jumped from a window — was arrested near the home in Coupar Angus, Perthshire.

A source close to Kane’s distraught family said: “Everyone is shocked by what happened.

“We have no idea what’s gone on in that house.

“We’re all heartbroken. Kane was a keen dancer and had won Coupar Has Talent twice. It’s just horrible.”

A number of grieving locals made their Facebook profile photo an image of two burning candles.

Ewan Grant wrote online: “Everyone will be holding their children a little tighter tonight. RIP to the beautiful wee boy and we’re all hoping and praying for the wee beautiful girl.

"Our thoughts and love is sent to the poor family.”

One mum told how her lad, a pal of Kane’s, was inconsolable. She posted: “He can’t stop crying and neither can I. I’m going to miss his wee face and all his questions.”

Lee Jane McCue added: “Devastated for all involved. They were the happiest wee faces.”

Among floral tributes left near the scene, a bunch of roses and lilies contained a handwritten note that read: “To Kane. I will remember you and I miss you.”

Cops continued to stand guard at a large cordon around the flat, attached to a Royal Bank of Scotland branch.

Forensics officers in white suits worked at the scene. The flat’s top window was wide open.

Passer-by Jackie Johnstone, 54, said: “It really is heartbreaking that such a young boy has been killed and a young girl injured.”

The wounded child is still being treated 15 miles away in Ninewells Hospital, Dundee.

As he appealed for witnesses, Chief Inspector Ian Scott announced cop patrols would be stepped up but said there was not thought to be any risk to the community.

He added: “Our thoughts are very much with the family and friends of the young boy who has died in this incident and with the young girl who remains in a serious condition in hospital.

“Enquiries are ongoing. However, I believe this to have been an isolated and contained incident with no threat to the wider public.”

Local MSP John Swinney urged anyone with information to answer the police plea — and also pledged to support anyone affected by the tragedy.

He added: “I’m horrified by the news that a child has lost his life and another child is in a critical condition.

"The Coupar Angus community is so close to home for me and the news is literally impossible to comprehend.”
