MUM'S ANGUISH

Dundee mum whose baby was decapitated at birth feels ‘robbed’ on what would have been his first week of school

THE mum of a baby decapitated during a botched delivery has told of her torment on what would have been his first week of school.

Laura Gallazzi, 36, felt “robbed” after missing out on taking tragic Steven along for his opening day.

She also revealed her anguish at not experiencing milestones like his first school photo.

Laura, of Dundee, said: “I should have been walking Steven to primary with the other mums. It’s every parent’s dream — and I was left feeling empty.

“My day was full of ‘what ifs’ — what lunchbox and school bag would he have picked?

“Would he have been all excited? Or shy, hiding behind me in the playground?

“That first day of school picture I never took, I’ve been robbed of that experience. I’m happy for the children and their families but I can’t help feel my stomach drop.”

Laura has been dreading the day for weeks.

She added: “I was so run down with stress.

“I had ulcers, my lips puffed up and I had heartburn. I cried a tsunami the night before.”

Ex-Red Cross carer Laura went to the city’s Botanic Gardens and visited a copper tree memorial to dead children.

She said: “We engraved a leaf for Steven, so it’s somewhere peaceful I can go to think about him. I laid some flowers and had a moment.”

Steven was beheaded at Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital in 2014 when Dr Vaishnavy Laxman failed to carry out a C-section.

She instead told Laura to push in labour while she yanked the tot’s legs before the mum felt a pop.

Dr Laxman was cleared to resume work and is now in India.

Laura is campaigning for legal rights for stillborn babies.
