And victims claimed they could not escape from the violence when they reached the station as a conductor tried to keep the thugs on the train.

One traveller, Margaret Munro, took to Twitter, to tell of the train terror.

She said: “I nearly got battered on the Inverness to Aberdeen train tonight between Nairn and Forres.

"Several other people did, both male and female. Riot broke out, old train, no CCTV, had to go find conductor, told us to phone police!

“Lots of people injured. Did not open doors at Forres when we got there soon enough as police had not arrived. Conductor was trying to keep perpetrators on train. People still getting battered on train. Lashing out at everyone and we could not escape!”

Another passenger Ian Anderson said he “narrowly escaped” the “riot” on the train.

He added: “People attacked by rampaging thugs. People knocked unconscious. People with faces covered in blood. Police turned up and watched helpless as casualties staggered onto Forres platform in shock. ScotRail need to up its security.”

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “We received a call at 6.40pm in relation to a disturbance on a train. There was a report of a large disturbance, however, when we got there everybody had run off.”

Officers are trying to track down the culprits and taking statements from witnesses.

The spokeswoman said the victims were thought to have suffered “minor injuries”.

ScotRail reached out to Margaret on the social media site after she told of her ordeal.

They said: “Are you okay, Margaret? Can you send me a private message with some more details? I am aware that there was a disturbance on one of our services on that route earlier tonight.”

They also contacted Ian. They said: “Really concerned to see this, Ian.”

A spokesman for ScotRail said: "There has been a disturbance on the train. There was a nineteen minute delay. We are sorry to customers whose journey was affected by the incident."

It is understood the violence took place between two groups.
