Insiders said the inmates set about Bennett with a makeshift weapon on an “order from the outside”.

It came after we revealed a bounty was put on Bennett’s head when the thug and three others were jailed over the terrifying gun attack in Robroyston, Glasgow.

A source said he was “lucky to be alive” following the frenzied assault at Addiewell nick in West Lothian.

The insider added: “It could have been a lot worse. He was taken by surprise and jumped in his cell by two other prisoners.

“One held him down while the other stabbed him in the back of the head.

“It was a bloodbath. The two lads are lifers with nothing to lose but the order came from the outside.

“Bennett and the other three made themselves targets and a price was put on their heads. There were always going to be consequences for what they did.

“They can’t be surprised that they’ve made a few enemies.”

Prison officers found Bennett — serving eight years for the shooting — soaked in blood in his cell after he was targeted this month.

It is understood he refused to go to hospital but was treated by medical staff at the prison.

An HMP Addiewell spokesman said: “We can confirm an incident occurred on Friday, October 4.”

We told previously how jealous Bennett believed his love rival was in the house when he opened fire in July 2017, weeks after Daniel, 39, was carved up in an ambush by machete-wielding thugs in nearby Port Dundas.

Sources said he lost the plot when his intended victim — who can’t be named — hooked up with his ex.

Chloe Walker, 22, Courtney McCreadie, 22, and Ian Moyes, 33, were also convicted.

The High Court in Glasgow heard Bennett and his cronies were snared after a pic emerged of Walker posing in her undies with the gun.

Another snap showed him apparently snorting white powder from her bum with the weapon in view.

Cops later arrested the gang and a car tracker linked them to the scene.

Prosecutors believe the men had the gun and Walker was the getaway driver.

All four were convicted of possessing a firearm or imitation firearm with intent to cause harm and jailed for a total of 32 years.
